An Interview with Writer Dominique Durden

Staff members interview writers from the Student Faculty Reading Series.

What inspired your piece?

I wrote “On the Walk Home” in response to Sandra Bland’s murder. It was hard for me. I don’t know how else to say it. And I think now, in the wake of the murder of Atatianna Jefferson, it still applies. And it hurts.

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading An Unquiet Mind by Kay Jamison Redfield, and it is devastatingly beautiful.

What was the reading experience like?

I thought the Student Faculty Reading Series was scary. I’m always nervous when I perform because it’s raw emotion, everything that I write has a piece of my heart in it, so it’s a big deal to share myself like that, but performing has taught me a lot about vulnerability.
